Ibises—white and/or white-faced—scuffle over a preferred perching spot.

Two-thirds of a century ago, attitudes toward top predators differed, and almost everybody considered the alligator gar to be the fishy “wolf” of Big Cypress Bayou and Caddo Lake. The only good one was a dead one. Commercial fishermen like Lige Albright had developed personal grudges, based on too many nights spent getting six- and eight-foot gars off their trotlines and out of their hoop nets, but even the state tried to kill all the alligator gars it could. Around 1950, a commercial fisherman Fred Dahmer knew named J. D. Spivy and another man got a state contract of some kind for alligator gar removal, prepared special hoop nets, and caught many fish near another gar spawning place at one end of Government Ditch. Fred recalled seeing dead gars stacked on the bank like so many logs.
